Candlestick Charts, Futures Trading, and Technical Analysis in Edo

They say the three greatest Chinese inventions are the compass, printing, and the gunpowder. What about Japan?

If I name just three, they would be Candlestick Charts, Futures Trading, and Technical Analysis.

It’s not widely known even in Japan, but all of these are widely used in stocks, cryptocurrency, and FX today.

The candlestick chart was invented in Japan around the 18th century to buy and sell rice more efficiently.

Buying and selling rice was not only real rice, but also “virtual rice” could be future-traded.

There was also a primitive internet-like system between Osaka and Edo(Tokyo since 1868) that used lots of flag signaling people to communicate the latest rice prices and information each other.

Rice traders who were able to use the “Internet” to get up-to-date information from as far away as 500 kilometers (311 miles) took advantage of the price difference between Osaka and Edo to make a fortune, even though there was a time difference about 20 minutes or so.

The technique for taking advantage of price differentials on exchanges is now known as “arbitrage” and is the most common winning strategy in cryptocurrencies.

If you’re planning to start cryptocurrency, FX, or stocks, it would be interesting to learn about Japan in the Edo period while you’re at it, haha

Edo period (1603-1868 CE)

Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し) shows what your Bitcoin FX will be like in skyrocketing (and crashing), lolol.

The earliest technical analysis called Sakata Gohou (酒田五法) had 5 basic styles and traders still use them even today.

This is one of the earliest technical analysis books written about Sakata Gohou

You can actually read this book at the Japanese national online library, but… the Japanese in this book was too old and almost impossible to understand for me ><

This is kinda meme. He looks cool but all he is doing is just loss-cutting, lol.

Btw, a few years ago I made a bot trading system like this (2019) and this (2017).
I tried to sell the system but almost nobody was interested in and I quit developing it… ><
If you’re interested in such things anyway, give me a job! lol
