Cool Special Effects in Kurosawa Films and Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is exactly the type of samurai game I’ve been waiting for.

No supernatural stuff, no monsters, no overly beautified characters, no one guy battles fifty guys at once.

Just a realistic, stylish, down-to-earth samurai game. And it looks beautiful.

Ghost of Tsushima has “Kurosawa Mode”; You can play the game with black and white screen with lower audio bitrates just like old Kurosawa films.

Now, let’s focus on Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998), the legendary samurai movie director, and see what actually great were in Kurosawa films!

This is just a personal episode and opinions I have in Kurosawa films:

Very sadly, Kurosawa films are kind of underrated in Japan because young people don’t know old Japanese well and can’t get what people are speaking in Kurosawa films since characters speak in difficult old Japanese with poor audio quality. (It couldn’t be helped, though)

Outside Japan, people watch Kurosawa films with English or their own native language subtitles, but Japanese people watch Kurosawa films without subtitles, which makes them really hard to fully understand what characters are actually speaking.

When I was a student, I watched the first 15 mins of Seven Samurai DVD without subtitles (I guess the latest DVD/BD have  Japanese subtitles too, but mine at that time didn’t have an option), but… I couldn’t catch well especially what the protagonist was speaking and quit watching it. The other day, thanks to Ghost of Tsushima, I finally enjoyed Seven Samurai with English subtitles!

I guess the audio problem has been (or will be?) basically solved thanks to the modern digital audio remaster technology and AI-based digital correction systems, though.

I also made a collage image with Toshiro Mifune in Kurosawa film with Ghost of Tsushima, lol.
